~ Jon Download Beekeeping For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyle)) 4th Edition
I am brand new to beekeeping and, in fact, haven't even received anything to begin with yet. I downloaded yet another beginner's book before this one and it was a bit too simple. However, I am a bit"old school" and would rather have a physical novel than to keep on going online to find all the information I wanted. . .it's just in too many places to keep track.
I have had a few Dummies books over the last few years and had seen this one mentioned by several people and groups online, so I downloaded it. It's a fantastic reference. There are several specifics to beekeeping like species, locales, hive types, etc. and that one comprises a bit about a lot of that to keep under consideration. It does stick to their recommendation for complete beginners though and thus the majority of the information in it which concentrate kingdom.
I've learned quite a good deal in the book and it prompted me not to wait anymore to begin downloading certain items so I'm prepared for my May bee nuc. I can see this novel as a good"go-to" reference when I have questions or concerns moving forward, with no issue. I still have a lot to learn, but I think anybody starting out in beekeeping wants this publication.

If you'd like to find out more about the way the body works but do not want to read textbooks on human anatomy and physiology, then this is the book for you. As Bryson writes,"We pass our existence in this warm Length of flesh and yet take it for granted." We're the product of three billion decades of evolutionary refinement, a biological system of unimagined complexity, and yet most of us can't even recognize where the spleen is, or exactly what it will.
If this publication doesn't pique your interest in the way your system works, then nothing probably will. Bryson, as usual, writes in an informative and entertaining way, presenting information in smart ways (for instance, when he says that a part of your cerebral cortex the size of a grain of sand can hold 1.2 billion copies of this book.)
I also love how Bryson does not mindlessly repeat the cliches we consistently here without doing his research. It is commonly stated that we only use 10 percent of our brains, or that our body includes 10 times as many bacterial cells as human cells. It turns out that these announcements, among others, are untrue, and Bryson shows you . He doesn't take anything for granted and researches all such claims.
You'll also come to understand--not just how much you don't understand about your system --but also how a lot of your body no one understands. The body is unfathomably complicated, and lots of areas and works remain cryptic.
If I had to say anything negative about the novel, it could be the absence of illustrations. Some diagrams could be helpful, particularly on the segments covering anatomy, as it's difficult to envision the structures as he is describing them. Also, don't expect to dive deeper to the functioning of every body --the details are discerning and you are likely to get equal steps of the background behind the discoveries. This isn't a bad thing, as long as you're expecting it.
In general, this may be the hottest book about the topic, and a fantastic entry point for further study in anatomy, physiology, human development, or medication.

Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who's also referred to as the"black science man" on various online forums, such as reddit. Dr. Tyson's also got some popular internet memes styled such as the"we got a bad ass over here" meme. However, in real life he is the director of the Hayden Planetarium in nyc and is a very accomplished astrophysicist. In a great deal of ways, he is the Carl Sagan of the generation. In case you have seen the TV series Cosmos on either PBS or Fox, then he's the new host for this revamped series which was hosted by Carl Sagan. He is very well known for his capacity to carry scientific concepts and distill them into something that we can understand. I am no scientist, so I need someone who understands these concepts to explain them in a manner which we are able to relate to.
This book is a choice of small essays that he is written for various newspapers, magazines, and internet blogs. Death by Black Hole touches a great deal of amazing scientific concepts which are almost taken by awarded by a great deal of people today, but it supplies a foundation for all that we do in space or dealing with the cosmos. Dr. Tyson is excellent at taking these concepts and putting them in situations that we can understand as non-scientists full with humor. A wonderful example of this is in the essay"Moving Ballistic," where he states exactly what happens to a person who jumps through a hole dug through the middle of the earth. The old"what happens if you dig all the way to China" quandary. He says,"Now comes the interesting part. Jump in. At this point you fall in a weightless, free-fall state till you get to the planet's center, where you inhale in the heat of the iron center." He then proceeds to dismiss this complication and then talk about gravity and what occurs as you move closer to and then further from a middle of mass.
Dr. Tyson is one of the finest scientific minds of our creation, and his important contribution to science is the ability to contact the layman, which will be you and me, and help them understand why science is so important to today's society. Therefore, if you would like a few laughs, and if you would like to learn about astrophysics, astronomy,"regular" physics, and the rest of the incredible things that happen in our cosmos, then I would recommend reading Death by Black Hole.

The Guru of Birds, by Jennifer Ackerman is a gamechanger for the manner in which the reader will think about birds. Maybe you thought birds were adorable but not very bright, for example. Get ready to change your mind when you read in chapter one about"007", a corbid (type of crow from New Caledonia), that moves through 8 measures, using tools, within two and a half minutes to get to a piece of food, following one scrutiny of the mystery. Many kinds of birds are very intelligent, in the way which humans are smart. Interestingly, the birds that take the longest to raise from the nest are the brightest and have the biggest brains (together with the appropriate neurons). This segment discusses the brilliance of some kinds of birds.Here you will find the tool users and other people, such as the kees, who love clowning around and horseplay.
The writing by the author Jennifer Ackerman is at times beautiful ( as when she's describing the rainforest at nightfall),or laugh-out-loud humorous (she discusses attempts by a bird biologist to measure intelligence in his test areas by disguising himself, wearing at distinct sessions: a kimono, a wig,sunglasses, or walking with a limp, or hopping. They constantly recognized him). I had been totally rolling out when I read this, thinking of Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther films. She's always refreshing too, with fresh information on birds right up for this year. As things have shifted radically in that which we understand about birds within the previous ten decades, this book is welcome as a summary, now. This is a book for bird fans of all kinds.
There's a section about the social aspect of birds, subtitled"twitter". This is fascinating too. The reader will learn about how different kinds of birds bond, and how they teach their young to perform certain important actions they'll eventually have to survive. Also discussed is how some kinds of birds teach others in their "group" techniques they've been trained. , Incredibly, scientists have educated certain critters to open feeders at a special manner. They then could watch and monitor as their trained birds performed the jobs in the woods. The birds they'd trained managed to train additional wild members to do precisely as they did, What collaborative small creatures!
Further , you understand about vocal virtuosity. I didn't understand that birds have to be tutored to sing yet. I understand this now, from this book.In this chapter you understand that among Thomas Jefferson's favorite pets were his mockingbirds. Afterwards,when you read about Honey Child, a hand raised mockingbird, your jaw will drop with amazement in the repertoire of his tunes, which he'd add to and occasionally drop throughout the length of his lifetime. Read on, through this award author's book, to find out about birds that decorate:"the bird artist", birds that can map:"a mapping mind" and finally, sparrows:"sparrowville".
This is a book to curl up with in the wintermonths, or even to take along in your own cruise. It doesn't have photos, only a few sketches of birds starting every chapter, but that is not the purpose of the book. The Genius of Birds is all about behaviors, routines, reversal learning, that bird is the"world's dumbest"--yesit has an offering for that, but maybe not the author's (and I cracked up in that part!!!) , the importance of studying birds in their own natural environment to find out more and better understand them, and plenty more. The Genius of Birds is a significant read, but nothing in it's wasted on the willing reader. I applaud Ackerman for shooting me outside and to all types of amazing places, when she composed this uplifting, extraordinary novel about beautiful, amazing critters.

A few things : I am a degreed botanist who once had a three ring binder where I had described the characteristics of each plant family found in California and virtually all plant families found in the US. I dropped it during a move sometime ago. I downloaded this publication in 2006 to help avoid duplicating all of that info again. I never looked at the book until this year when I made a decision to crucial out some weeds in the backyard. Although I found a couple of mistakes in the text (that only a taxonomist or morphologist would see), but overall this book duplicated my three ring binder plus it added other information on use and toxicity. I have read it through several times and pick up small facts each time. Sure an untrained person is going to have some trouble using it without taking the opportunity to understand the basics of a plant. With just a little effort this publication will be quite helpful. And please be aware that the author basically described the demographics of where this book would be most helpful: 85 percent in Montana (where he lives) and 5 percent in Florida (where I figure that he never lived).
Update 11/5/2012: Only found a gorgeous weed from the backyard. Used this book to determine it had been in the Solanum family. Unfortunately it's a genus that wasn't covered in the book. . .but the book was helpful in eliminating all of the other genera. Double checked my results by employing the Calphotos web site and sure enough there it was. Botany in a Day is extremely helpful even when the genus is not present in the book!

I have learned many new things (3/4 of the way through book 1); however I think it is worth saying a few potential problems that haven't been elucidated by additional reviews. Ultimately I'm happy that I downloaded the books but I wouldn't recommend them to others without reservation.
To begin with, I don't believe these books are acceptable for someone who doesn't already have background in the content. They move very fast and don't spend enough time on any 1 subject to properly ingrain it into the mind. If you're trying to teach yourself from scratch, then I would recommend a traditional textbook over these assignments. If you do decide to go with them, you'll also have to download a nutritional supplement like"Exercises for the Feynman Lectures on Physics" since the publication does not have some problem sets.
Secondly, the books are showing their age. There were several points in which for instance a 3d graph would have made things much clearer, but due to the limitations of the time it was not possible to supply such a guess. There was an whole chapter on numerical calculation which is interesting purely at a historic manner now, as it teaches you the way calculation was done before the availability of pocket calculators. There were several points where Feynman said that something wasn't figured out at the moment, and I was left wondering if we had enhanced our understanding of it in the 50 years since. The basic material has not changed at all because Feynman gave the lectures, but there are still many little ways in which the age of the books are a detriment.
Finally, I concur with all the other comments about difficult to read glossy paper, small print, and poor utilization of space.
