I'm new to beekeeping and, in fact, have not even received anything to get started with yet. I downloaded another beginner's book before this one and it was a bit too simple. But, I am a little"old school" and would rather have a physical book than to continue moving online to find all the information I wanted. . .it's only in a lot of places to stay track.
I have had a couple of Dummies books through the years and had seen this one mentioned by several individuals and groups online, so I downloaded it. It's a fantastic reference. There are several specifics to beekeeping such as species, locales, hive kinds, etc. and that one comprises at least a little about a lot of that to bear under account. It will stick to their own recommendation for absolute beginners though and so the majority of the information in it that concentrate kingdom.
I've learned quite a good deal from the novel and it prompted me not to wait anymore to start downloading certain items so I'm prepared for my May bee nuc. I can see this novel as a great"go-to" mention once I have concerns or questions going forward, with no matter. I have a lot to learn, but I think anyone starting out in beekeeping wants this book.

We are the product of three billion decades of evolutionary refinement, a biological system of unimagined complexity, and most people can't even identify where the spleen is, or exactly what it will.
If this publication does not pique your curiosity in the way your system works, then nothing probably will. Bryson, as usual, writes in an informative and entertaining manner, presenting information in clever ways (for instance, when he says that a portion of your cerebral cortex the size of a grain of sand could hold 1.2 billion copies of the book.) The publication is filled with calculations and analogies like this to help the reader better contextualize the information.
I also love how Bryson doesn't mindlessly repeat the cliches we consistently here without performing his research. It is commonly said that we only use 10 percent of our brains, or that our body contains 10 times as many bacterial cells as individual cells. It turns out that these announcements, among others, are untrue, and Bryson shows you why. He doesn't take anything for granted and researches all such claims.
You'll also come to understand--not just how much you really do not understand about the body--but also how a lot of your body no one understands. The body is unfathomably complex, and many locations and works remain mysterious.
If I had to say anything negative about the book, it would be the lack of illustrations. Some diagrams could be helpful, particularly on the segments covering anatomy, as it is hard to envision the structures as he's describing them. Also, don't expect to dive deeper into the functioning of every body --the particulars are discerning and you are likely to get equal steps of the background behind the discoveries. This is not a bad thing, as long as you are expecting it.
Overall, this may be the hottest book about the topic, and a good entry point for further research in anatomy, physiology, human evolution, or medication.

Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who's also known as the"black science man" on various internet forums, such as reddit. Dr. Tyson's also got some hot internet memes styled such as the"we got a bad ass over here" meme. However, in real life he's the director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City and is an extremely accomplished astrophysicist. In a lot of ways, he is the Carl Sagan of our generation. If you have seen the TV series Cosmos on either PBS or Fox, then he is the new host for this revamped series which used to be hosted by Carl Sagan. He's very well known for his ability to carry scientific concepts and distill them into something that we are able to understand. I'm no scientist, so I want someone who understands these concepts to explain them in a way which we can relate to.
This publication is a choice of little essays that he's written for various newspapers, magazines, and internet blogs. Death by Black Hole touches a lot of amazing scientific theories that are almost taken by granted by a great deal of people now, but it supplies a foundation for everything that we do in distance or dealing with the cosmos. Dr. Tyson is one of the best scientific minds of the creation, and his major contribution to science is his ability to contact the layman, that will be you and me, and help them understand why science is essential to today's society. So in the event that you want a few laughs, and if you would like to know about astrophysics, astronomy,"routine" physics, and all the other incredible things that occur in our cosmos, I would recommend reading Death by Black Hole.

It is a book to curl up with in wintermonths, or even to take along in your cruise. It doesn't really have photographs, just a couple of sketches of birds opening every chapter, but that isn't the point of this publication. The Guru of Birds is about behaviours, patterns, alteration learning, that bird would be the"world's dumbest"--yesit has an offering for this, but maybe not the author's (and I cracked up in the part!!!) , the importance of studying birds in their own natural surroundings to find out more and better understand them, and more. The Genius of Birds is a big read, but nothing in it is wasted on the prepared reader. I applaud Ackerman for taking me outside and also to all types of amazing places, when she wrote this uplifting, amazing novel about beautiful, beautiful birds.

A few things first: I am a degreed botanist who once had a three ring binder in which I had clarified the qualities of each plant family discovered in California and almost all plant families found in america. I dropped it during a move sometime ago. I downloaded this book in 2006 to help avoid duplicating all of that info again. I never looked at the book until this year when I decided to key out some weeds in the garden. Although I found a couple of mistakes in the text (that only a taxonomist or morphologist would see), but overall this publication replicated my three ring binder plus it included other information on usage and toxicity. I've read it through a few times and pick up little facts each time. Sure an untrained person is going to have some trouble using it without taking the time to understand the fundamentals of a plant. With only a little effort this publication will be very useful. And please be aware that the author basically described the demographics of where this book would be most helpful: 85% in Montana (where he resides ) and 5% in Florida (where I figure that he never lived).
Update 11/5/2012: Only found a gorgeous weed in the backyard. Used this book to determine it was in the Solanum family. Unfortunately it is a genus which was not covered in the book. . .but the book was helpful in eliminating all the other genera. Botany in a Day is very useful even when the genus is not within the book!

I have a college level background in mathematics and am reading these to fill in gaps in my knowledge. I've learned many new things already (3/4 of the way through book 1); however I think that it might be worth stating a few potential issues that haven't been elucidated by additional reviews. Finally I'm happy that I downloaded the novels but I would not suggest them to others without reservation.
To begin with, I don't think these books are acceptable for someone who doesn't already have background in this content. They move very fast and don't spend enough time on any 1 subject to properly ingrain it into the mind. If you are trying to teach yourself from scratch, then I would recommend a conventional textbook over these lectures. If you do decide to go with them, you'll also need to download a nutritional supplement like"Exercises for the Feynman Lectures on Physics" because the book does not have any problem places.
Secondly, the novels are showing their age. There were a few points in which for example a 3d graph would have made things much clearer, but due to the constraints of this time it was not possible to supply such a guess. There was an whole chapter on numerical calculation that's interesting purely in a historic fashion now, as it teaches you how calculation was completed before the access to pocket calculators. There were a few points where Feynman said that something wasn't figured out at the moment, and I was left wondering when we'd improved our understanding of it at the 50 years since. The basic material hasn't changed at all because Feynman gave the lectures, but there are still many small ways that the age of these books are a detriment.
Finally, I concur with the other comments about hard to read glossy paper, small print, and inadequate utilization of space.
