I'm brand new to beekeeping and, in fact, haven't even received anything to begin with yet. I downloaded yet another beginner's book before this one and it was a bit too simple. But, I'm a little"old school" and prefer to have a tangible book than to keep on moving online to find all the information I needed. . .it's only in a lot of areas to stay track.
I've had a couple of Dummies books through the years and had seen this one mentioned by several individuals and groups online, so I downloaded it. It's a great reference. There are many particulars to beekeeping like species, locales, hive kinds, etc. and that one comprises a little about a lot of that to keep into account. It does stick to their recommendation for complete beginners though and thus the majority of the information in it that concentrate kingdom.
I have heard quite a lot from the book and it prompted me to not wait anymore to begin downloading certain items so I'm prepared for my May bee nuc. I can see this book as a good"go-to" reference when I have questions or concerns moving forward, with no matter. If you want to find out more about how the body works but do not want to read textbooks on human anatomy and physiology, then this is the book for you. If this publication doesn't pique your interest in the way your body works, then nothing probably will. Bryson takes the reader through each body system, describing the anatomy and physiology of all but also providing historical information, expert interviews, and biographical details on the leaders of medical discovery. Bryson, as usual, writes in an informative and interesting way, presenting information in clever ways (for example, when he states that a portion of your cerebral cortex that the size of a grain of sand can hold 1.2 billion copies of this publication.) The publication is filled with calculations and analogies such as this to help the reader better contextualize the information.
I also love how Bryson does not mindlessly repeat the cliches we always here without performing his study. It's commonly stated we only use 10 percent of our brains, or that our body contains 10 times as many bacterial cells as human cells. It turns out that these announcements, among others, are untrue, and Bryson shows you . He does not take anything for granted and researches all such claims.
You will also come to understandnot just how much you really do not understand about your system --but also how a lot of your body nobody understands. The body is unfathomably complex, and many locations and works remain cryptic.
If I needed to say anything negative about the novel, it could be the absence of illustrations. Some diagrams could be helpful, especially on the segments covering anatomy, as it is hard to visualize the structures as he's describing them. Also, don't expect to dive too deeply into the functioning of every body system--the particulars are selective and you are likely to get equal measures of the background behind the discoveries. This is not a bad thing, as long as you are expecting it.
Overall, this is probably the best popular book on the subject, and a good entry point for additional study in anatomy, physiology, human development, or medicine.

Nevertheless, in real life he is the director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City and is an extremely accomplished astrophysicist. In a lot of ways, he is the Carl Sagan of the generation. If you've seen the TV series Cosmos on PBS or Fox, then he is the new host for this revamped series which was hosted by Carl Sagan. He is very well-known for his capacity to carry scientific concepts and distill them into something that we are able to understand. I am no scientist, so I want someone who understands these concepts to describe them in a way that we are able to relate to.

Dr. Tyson is one of the best scientific minds of our generation, and his major contribution to science is his ability to connect with the layman, that is you and me, and help them understand why science is essential to today's society. So in the event that you would like a few laughs, and if you would like to know about astrophysics, astronomy,"routine" physics, and the rest of the incredible things that occur in our cosmos, I would suggest reading Death by Black Hole.

As things have shifted radically in that which we know about birds within the past ten decades, this publication is welcome as a summary, now. This is a publication for bird fans of all sorts.
There's a part about the social aspect of birds, subtitled"twitter". This is intriguing too. Also discussed is the way some types of birds instruct others in their "group" techniques they have been trained. , Incredibly, scientists have educated certain critters to open feeders in a special manner. They then were able to watch and monitor as their trained birds performed the jobs in the woods. The birds they had trained managed to train other wild members to do precisely as they did, What collaborative little creatures!
Further on, you understand about vocal virtuosity. I didn't understand that birds have to be tutored to sing yet. I understand this now, from that book.In this chapter you understand that among Thomas Jefferson's favourite pets were his mockingbirds. Later,when you read about Honey Child, a hand raised mockingbird, your jaw will drop with amazement at the repertoire of his tunes, which he'd increase and occasionally drop throughout the length of his life. Woodpeckers, wrens, jays, you name it, Honey Child is worth the read! You will learn that this complicated process of vocal learning is termed"advanced", because, it's done"our way", eg., the way people teach their children, and how kids learn to selectively speak.The male songbirds that have improved tunes appeal to the females longer, too.As the author writes,"Listening for super-sexy syllables enables female canaries to rule out men with poor bilateral co-ordination" That is important, if you're a lady canary!

This is a book to curl up with at the wintermonths, or to take along on your own cruise. It does not have photographs, just a couple of sketches of birds opening every chapter, but this isn't the purpose of this publication. The Guru of Birds is about behaviors, patterns, alteration learning, which bird is the"world's dumbest"--yes, it has an offering for that, but not the author's (and I cracked up in the part!!!) , the significance of studying birds in their own natural environment to find out more and better understand them, and more. The Genius of Birds is a significant read, but nothing in it is wasted on the willing reader. I applaud Ackerman for taking me outdoors and also to all types of amazing places, when she wrote this uplifting, amazing novel about beautiful, amazing critters.

A few things first: I am a degreed botanist who once had a three ring binder where I'd described the qualities of every plant family discovered in California and virtually all plant families found in the US. I dropped it during a move sometime past. I downloaded this publication in 2006 to help prevent copying all that info again. I never looked in the book until this year when I decided to crucial out some weeds from the backyard. Although I found a few mistakes in the text (that merely a taxonomist or morphologist would visit ), but overall this book replicated my three ring binder plus it included other information on usage and toxicity. I have read it through several times and pick up little details every time. Sure an untrained person will have some difficulty using it without taking the time to understand the basics of a plant. With only a little effort this publication will be very useful. And please note that the author essentially described the demographics of where this book would be most helpful: 85% in Montana (where he lives) and 5 percent in Florida (where I guess that he never dwelt ). The West, Midwest, and Northeast are well covered.
Update 11/5/2012: Just found a gorgeous weed in the backyard. Used this book to determine it had been from the Solanum family. Unfortunately it is a genus that was not covered in the publication. . .but the book was helpful in removing all the other genera. Employing a Jepson guide and just the section on Solanums, I managed to key it out to Nicandra physalodes (Apple of Peru). Botany in a Day is very useful even when the genus isn't within the book!

I have a school level history in mathematics and therefore are reading these to fill in gaps in my knowledge. I have learned lots of new things (3/4 of how through book 1); nonetheless I think that it might be worth stating a few potential problems that have not been elucidated by additional reviews. Finally I'm happy that I downloaded the books but I would not recommend them to others without reservation.
To begin with, I don't think these books are suitable for someone who doesn't yet have background in the material. They move very quickly and don't spend enough time on any 1 topic to properly ingrain it into the mind. If you're trying to teach yourself from scratch, I would advise a conventional textbook over these lectures. If you do choose to go with them, you will also need to download a supplement such as"Exercises for the Feynman Lectures on Physics" since the book doesn't have any problem places.
Second, the novels are showing their age. There were a few points where for instance a 3d chart would have made things much clearer, but due to the constraints of this time it wasn't possible to supply such a figure. There was an whole chapter on numerical calculation which is interesting purely at a historical fashion today, as it teaches you how calculation was done before the access to pocket calculators. There were several points where Feynman stated that something wasn't figured out in the time, and I was left wondering when we'd improved our understanding of it in the 50 years since. The fundamental material hasn't changed at all because Feynman gave the lectures, but there are still many small ways in which the era of these books are a detriment.
Finally, I agree with the other comments about difficult to browse glossy paper, small print, and inadequate utilization of space.
