I'm new to beekeeping and, in fact, haven't even received anything to get started with yet. I downloaded another beginner's book before this one and it was a bit too simple. However, I am a bit"old school" and would rather have a tangible novel than to continue moving online to find all of the information I wanted. . .it's just in too many places to stay track.
I've had a few Dummies books over the last few years and had seen this one mentioned by several individuals and groups online, so I downloaded it. It's a fantastic reference. There are many specifics to beekeeping such as species, locales, hive kinds, etc. and this one includes at least a bit about a lot of that to keep into consideration. It does stick to their own recommendation for absolute beginners though and thus most of the information in it which concentrate realm.
I have heard quite a lot in the novel and it prompted me not to wait anymore to start downloading particular items so that I'm prepared for my May bee nuc. I can see this novel as a great"go-to" reference once I have concerns or questions going forward, with no matter. I have a ton to learn, but I think anyone starting out in beekeeping wants this publication.

If you'd like to find out more about how the body works but do not want to read textbooks on human anatomy and physiology, then this is the book for you. As Bryson writes,"We pass our existence within this warm wobble of flesh and take it for granted." We are the product of three thousand years of evolutionary refinement, a biological system of unimagined complexity, and yet most people can't actually recognize where the spleen is, or exactly what it does.
If this book does not pique your curiosity in the way your body works, then nothing probably will. Bryson takes the reader through each body , describing the anatomy and physiology of all but also providing historical information, expert interviews, and biographical details on the leaders of medical discovery. Bryson, as usual, writes in an informative and entertaining way, presenting information in smart ways (for instance, when he says that a portion of your cerebral cortex that the size of a grain of sand can hold 1.2 billion copies of the book.) The book is filled with calculations and analogies like this to help the reader better contextualize the information.
I also love how Bryson doesn't mindlessly repeat the cliches we consistently here without doing his research. It turns out that these statements, among others, are untrue, and Bryson shows you . He does not take anything for granted and researches all such claims.
You will also come to understand--not only how much you really do not understand about the body--but also how much of your body nobody understands. The body is unfathomably complex, and lots of locations and works remain cryptic.
If I had to say anything negative about the novel, it would be the absence of examples. Some diagrams could be helpful, particularly on the sections covering anatomy, as it's hard to visualize the structures as he is describing them. Also, don't expect to dive too deeply to the functioning of each body system--the particulars are selective and you are going to receive equal measures of the history behind the discoveries. This isn't a bad thing, as long as you're expecting it.
Overall, this may be the best popular book on the subject, and a fantastic entry point for further research in anatomy, physiology, human development, or medication.

Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who's also referred to as the"black science man" on various internet forums, such as reddit. Dr. Tyson's also got some popular online memes styled after him such as the"we got a bad ass over here" meme. Nevertheless, in real life he's the director of the Hayden Planetarium in nyc and is a very accomplished astrophysicist. In a lot of ways, he is the Carl Sagan of our generation. In case you have seen the TV series Cosmos on PBS or Fox, then he's the new host for this revamped series which used to be hosted by Carl Sagan. He is very well-known for his ability to carry scientific theories and distill them into something that we can understand. I'm no scientist, so I need someone who understands these theories to explain them in a manner that we can relate to.
This publication is a choice of little essays which he is written for a variety of newspapers, magazines, and online blogs. Death by Black Hole touches on a great deal of amazing scientific concepts that are almost accepted by granted by a lot of people today, but it provides a foundation for all that we do in space or addressing the cosmos. Dr. Tyson is excellent at taking such theories and placing them in situations which we may understand as non-scientists complete with humor. A wonderful illustration of this is in the essay"Moving Ballistic," where he says exactly what happens to a man who jumps through a hole dug through the middle of the planet. The older"what happens when you dig all of the way to China" quandary. He says,"Now comes the interesting part. Jump in. At this point you fall in a weightless, free-fall state till you get to the earth's center, where you inhale in the warmth of the iron center." He then goes on to dismiss this complication and then talk about gravity and what occurs as you go closer to and then farther from a center of mass.
Dr. Tyson is one of the best scientific minds of our creation, and his major contribution to science is the ability to connect with the layman, that is you and me, and help them understand why science is essential to today's society. So if you want a few laughs, and if you want to learn about astrophysics, astronomy,"regular" physics, and all the other incredible things that occur within our cosmos, then I would suggest reading Death by Black Hole.

There is a section about the societal aspect of birds, subtitled"twitter". This is fascinating also. The reader will learn about how different kinds of birds bond, and how they teach their young to perform certain vital actions they'll gradually need to survive. Also discussed is how some types of birds instruct others in their particular"group" techniques they've been trained. , Incredibly, scientists have educated certain critters to open feeders at a distinctive method. Then they were able to watch and monitor as their trained birds performed the tasks in the forests. The birds they had trained was able to train other wild members to perform precisely as they did, What collaborative little creatures!
Further , you learn about vocal virtuosity. I didn't understand that birds must be tutored to sing yet. I understand this now, from this book.In this chapter you learn that one of Thomas Jefferson's favorite pets were his mockingbirds. Later,when you read about Honey Child, a hand elevated mockingbird, your jaw will fall with amazement in the repertoire of his songs, which he would add to and occasionally drop throughout the length of his lifetime. You may learn that this intricate process of vocal learning is termed as"advanced", because, it's done"our way", eg., the way humans teach their kids, and the way children learn to speak.The male songbirds that have better songs appeal to the females more, too.As the author writes,"searching for super-sexy syllables allows female canaries to rule out males with poor bilateral co-ordination" This is vital, if you're a lady canary!
Read on, through this award author's book, to find out about birds who decorate:"the bird artist", birds who can map:"a mapping mind" and ultimately, sparrows:"sparrowville".
It is a book to curl up with at wintermonths, or even to take along in your cruise. It doesn't have photographs, only a few sketches of birds opening each chapter, but that isn't the point of the publication. The Genius of Birds is all about behaviours, patterns, reversal learning, that bird is the"world's dumbest"--yes, it has an offering for this, but maybe not the author's (and I cracked up at the part!!!) , the importance of studying birds in their own natural environment to find out more and better understand them, and more. The Genius of Birds is a big read, but nothing in it's wasted on the prepared reader. I applaud Ackerman for taking me outside and also to all types of amazing places, when she composed this uplifting, extraordinary novel about beautiful, amazing critters.

A few things : I am a degreed botanist who once had a three ring binder where I had clarified the characteristics of each plant family discovered in California and virtually all plant families found in the US. I dropped it during a movement sometime past. I downloaded this publication in 2006 to help prevent copying all of that info again. I never looked in the book until this year once I decided to key out some weeds from the backyard. Though I found a few mistakes in the text (which only a taxonomist or morphologist would see), but overall this book replicated my three ring binder also it added other information on usage and toxicity. I've read it through a few times and pick up little details each time. Sure that an untrained person will have some difficulty using it without first taking the opportunity to understand the basics of a plant. With just a little effort this publication will be very useful. And please note that the author basically described the demographics of where this book would be helpful: 85 percent in Montana (where he resides ) and 5% in Florida (where I figure that he never lived). Even the West, Midwest, and Northeast are well covered.
Update 11/5/2012: Just found a gorgeous weed from the backyard. Used this publication to determine it had been in the Solanum family. Unfortunately it's a genus that was not covered in the book. . .but the book was helpful in removing all of the other genera. Employing a Jepson manual and only the section on Solanums, I managed to key it out to Nicandra physalodes (Apple of Peru). Double checked my results by employing the Calphotos web site and sure enough there it was. Botany in a Day is very helpful even when the genus is not within the book!

I have a school level background in physics and therefore are reading these to fill in gaps in my knowledge. I have learned lots of new things (3/4 of how through book 1); however I think it might be worth saying a couple of potential issues that have not been elucidated by other reviews. Finally I am happy that I downloaded the novels but I would not suggest them to others without reservation.
First, I don't believe these books are suitable for someone who does not yet have background in this material. They move very quickly and do not spend enough time on any one subject to properly ingrain it in the mind. If you're trying to teach yourself from scratch, then I would advise a traditional textbook over these assignments. Should you decide to go with them, you will also need to download a supplement such as"Exercises for the Feynman Lectures on Physics" since the book doesn't have any problem sets.
Secondly, the books are showing their age. There were a few points where for instance a 3d chart would have made things much clearer, but due to the limitations of the time it was not possible to supply such a figure. There was an entire chapter on numerical calculation which is interesting purely at a historical manner now, as it teaches you the way calculation was completed before the availability of pocket calculators. There were several points where Feynman said that something wasn't figured out in the time, and that I was left wondering if we'd enhanced our understanding of it at the 50 years since. The fundamental material has not changed at all because Feynman gave the lectures, but there are still many little ways in which the age of these novels are a detriment.
Finally, I concur with all the other comments about difficult to read glossy paper, small print, and poor utilization of space.
