~ Jon Download Beekeeping For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyle)) 4th Edition
I'm new to beekeeping and, in fact, haven't even received anything to get started with yet. I downloaded yet another beginner's book before this one and it was a bit too basic. But, I am a bit"old school" and would rather have a tangible book than to continue moving online to find all the information I wanted. . .it's just in too many places to keep track.
I have had a couple of Dummies books through the years and had seen this one mentioned by numerous people and groups online, so I downloaded it. It is a fantastic reference. There are several particulars to beekeeping like species, locales, hive kinds, etc. and that one includes at least a little about a lot of that to bear under consideration. It will stick to their own recommendation for absolute beginners though and thus the majority of the information in it that focus kingdom.
I've learned quite a good deal in the book and it prompted me to not wait anymore to start downloading particular items so I'm ready for my May bee nuc. I can see this novel as a good"go-to" mention when I have concerns or questions going forward, with no issue. I still have a ton to learn, but I think anybody starting out in beekeeping wants this book.

If you want to learn more about the way the body works but don't need to read textbooks on human anatomy and physiology, this is the book for you. Since Bryson writes,"We pass our existence in this warm Length of flesh and yet take it entirely for granted." We are the product of three billion years of evolutionary refinement, a biological machine of unimagined complexity, and yet most people can't actually recognize where the spleen is, or what it will.
If this book doesn't pique your interest in the way your system works, then nothing probably will. Bryson takes the reader through every body system, describing the anatomy and physiology of each, but also providing historical information, expert interviews, and biographical details on the pioneers of medical discovery. Bryson, as usual, writes in an informative and entertaining way, presenting information in smart ways (for instance, when he states that a part of your cerebral cortex the size of a grain of sand can hold 1.2 billion copies of this publication.) The publication is full of calculations and analogies like this to help the reader better contextualize the information.
I also appreciate how Bryson does not mindlessly repeat the cliches we consistently here without performing his study. It is commonly stated that we only use 10 percent of our brains, or that our own body contains 10 times as many bacterial cells as individual cells. It turns out that these announcements, among others, are untrue, and Bryson shows you . He doesn't take anything for granted and researches all of such claims.
You will also come to understandnot just how much you do not understand about the body--but also how a lot of your body no one understands. The human anatomy is unfathomably complicated, and many areas and works remain cryptic.
If I needed to say anything negative about the book, it would be the absence of illustrations. Some diagrams could be helpful, particularly on the segments covering anatomy, as it's hard to envision the structures as he is describing them. Also, don't expect to dive deeper into the functioning of each body --the details are discerning and you're going to receive equal steps of the history behind the discoveries. This isn't a bad thing, provided that you are expecting it.
Overall, this may be the hottest book on the topic, and a good entry point for further research in physiology, anatomy, human development, or medication.

Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who is also known as the"black science man" on various online forums, such as reddit. Dr. Tyson's also got some hot online memes styled after him such as the"we got a bad ass over here" meme. Nevertheless, in real life he's the director of the Hayden Planetarium in nyc and is a very accomplished astrophysicist. In a lot of ways, he is the Carl Sagan of the creation. If you've seen the TV show Cosmos on PBS or Fox, then he's the new host for this revamped show which used to be hosted by Carl Sagan. He's very well-known for his capacity to take scientific theories and distill them into something which we are able to understand. I am no scientist, so I want someone who understands these concepts to describe them in a way that we are able to relate to.
This publication is a selection of little essays which he's written for a variety of newspapers, magazines, and internet blogs. He then goes on to dismiss this complication and talk about gravity and what occurs as you move closer to and then farther from a middle of mass.
Dr. Tyson is one of the finest scientific minds of the creation, and his important contribution to science is the ability to connect with the layman, which is you and me, and help them understand why science is so important to today's society. So if you want a few laughs, and if you would like to learn about astrophysics, astronomy,"regular" physics, and all the other incredible things that occur within our cosmos, then I would suggest reading Death by Black Hole.

They constantly recognized him). I was completely rolling out when I read this, considering Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther films. She's always fresh too, with new news on birds right up to this season. As things have changed radically in what we know about birds over the past ten years, this publication is welcome as an overview, now. This is a book for bird lovers of all kinds.
There is a part about the social aspect of birds, subtitled"twitter". This is intriguing also. The reader will learn about how different kinds of birds bond, and the way in which they teach their young to perform certain vital actions they will gradually need to endure. Also discussed is the way some kinds of birds teach others in their particular"group" techniques they've been trained. , Incredibly, researchers have taught certain birds to open feeders in a special method. They then could watch and track as their trained birds performed the jobs in the forests. The birds they had trained was able to train other wild members to do exactly as they did, What collaborative small creatures!
Further , you understand about vocal virtuosity. I didn't know that birds must be tutored to sing however. I understand this today, from this book.In this chapter you learn that one of Thomas Jefferson's favorite pets were his mockingbirds. Later,when you read about Honey Child, a hand elevated mockingbird, your jaw will fall with amazement at the repertoire of his songs, which he'd increase and occasionally drop throughout the length of his lifetime. Woodpeckers, wrens, jays, you name it, Honey Child is worth the read! You will learn that this complicated process of vocal learning is termed as"advanced", since, it's done"our way", eg., the way people teach their kids, and how kids learn to speak.The male songbirds who have improved songs appeal to the females more, too.As the writer writes,"Listening for super-sexy syllables enables female canaries to rule out males with poor bilateral co-ordination" This is important, if you are a lady canary!

This is a book to curl up with in the winter, or even to take along on your own cruise. It doesn't have photographs, just a few sketches of birds starting every chapter, but that is not the point of the publication. The Guru of Birds is about behaviors, patterns, alteration learning, that bird would be the"world's dumbest"--yes, it has an offering for that, but not the author's (and I cracked up at the part!!!) , the significance of studying birds in their own natural surroundings to learn more and better understand them, and plenty more. The Genius of Birds is a big read, but nothing in it is wasted on the prepared reader. I applaud Ackerman for shooting me outside and to all types of amazing places, when she wrote this uplifting, extraordinary novel about beautiful, beautiful birds.

A couple of things first: I am a degreed botanist who once had a three ring binder where I had clarified the characteristics of every plant family found in California and almost all plant families found in the US. I dropped it during a movement sometime ago. I downloaded this book in 2006 to help avoid duplicating all of that information again. I never looked at the book until this year when I made a decision to crucial out some weeds from the garden. Though I found a few mistakes in the text (which merely a taxonomist or morphologist would see), but overall this publication duplicated my three ring binder also it included other information on use and toxicity. I have read it through a few times and pick up small details each time. Sure that an untrained person will have some trouble using it without taking the opportunity to understand the basics of a plant. Nothing is free. With only a little effort this book will be quite helpful. And please note that the author essentially described the demographics of where this book would be most helpful: 85% in Montana (where he lives) and 5% in Florida (where I figure that he never lived).
Update 11/5/2012: Just found a gorgeous weed in the backyard. Used this book to determine it was from the Solanum family. Unfortunately it's a genus which was not covered in the book. . .but the book was helpful in removing all the other genera. Using a Jepson manual and just the section on Solanums, I was able to key it out to Nicandra physalodes (Apple of Peru). Double checked my results by using the Calphotos website and sure enough there it was. Botany in a Day is very useful even when the genus is not present in the book!

I have a school level history in physics and am reading these to fill in gaps in my knowledge. I have learned lots of new things already (3/4 of how through book 1); nonetheless I think it might be worth stating a few potential problems that haven't been elucidated by other reviews. Finally I'm happy that I downloaded the novels but I would not recommend them to others without reservation.
First, I don't believe these books are acceptable for someone who does not yet have background in this material. They move very fast and don't spend enough time on any 1 topic to properly ingrain it in the mind. If you're trying to educate yourself from scratch, then I would advise a traditional textbook over these lectures. Should you decide to go with them, you will also have to download a nutritional supplement such as"Exercises for the Feynman Lectures on Physics" since the book does not have any problem places.
Secondly, the novels are showing their age. There were a few points where for example a 3d graph would have made things much clearer, but due to the limitations of the time it wasn't possible to provide such a figure. There was an entire chapter on numerical calculation that's interesting purely at a historical manner now, as it teaches you the way calculation was completed before the access to pocket calculators. There were a few points where Feynman said that something was not figured out in the moment, and that I was left wondering when we had enhanced our understanding of it at the 50 years since. The basic material has not changed at all because Feynman gave the lectures, but there are still many small ways that the era of these novels are a detriment.
Finally, I agree with all the other comments about difficult to browse glossy paper, small print, and inadequate utilization of space.
