~ Jon Download Beekeeping For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyle)) 4th Edition
I'm new to beekeeping and, in fact, haven't even received anything to get started with yet. I downloaded another beginner's book before this one and it was a bit too basic. However, I'm a bit"old school" and would rather have a tangible book than to continue going online to find all of the information I wanted. . .it's only in too many areas to keep track.
I've had a couple of Dummies books through the years and had seen this one mentioned by several individuals and groups online, so I downloaded it. It is a fantastic reference. There are several specifics to beekeeping such as species, locales, hive types, etc. and this one comprises a little about a lot of that to bear into account. It will stick to their recommendation for complete beginners though and so the majority of the information in it which concentrate kingdom.
I've heard quite a good deal from the novel and it prompted me to not wait anymore to start downloading certain items so that I'm prepared for my May bee nuc. I can see this novel as a great"go-to" reference once I have questions or concerns moving forward, with no issue. I still have a lot to learn, but I think anyone starting out in beekeeping needs this publication.
~ Ryan Boissonneault Download The Body: A Guide for Occupants 1st Edition
If you'd like to find out more about the way the body works but do not want to read textbooks on human anatomy and physiology, this is the book for you. As Bryson writes,"We pass our presence in this warm Length of flesh and take it for granted." We're the product of three thousand years of evolutionary refinement, a biological system of unimagined complexity, and most of us can not even recognize where the spleen is, or what it will.
If this book does not pique your interest in the way your body works, then nothing probably will. Bryson, as usual, writes in an informative and interesting way, presenting information in clever ways (for example, when he says that a part of your cerebral cortex the size of a grain of sand could hold 1.2 billion copies of the book.) The publication is filled with calculations and analogies like this to help the reader better contextualize the information.
I also appreciate how Bryson does not mindlessly repeat the cliches we always here without performing his research. It is commonly said that we only use 10 percent of our brains, or that our body contains 10 times as numerous bacterial cells as individual cells. It turns out that these announcements, among others, are false, and Bryson shows you . He does not take anything for granted and researches all such claims.
You'll also come to understand--not only how much you really don't understand about the body--but also how a lot of your body nobody understands. The human anatomy is unfathomably complex, and many locations and functions remain mysterious.
If I needed to say anything negative about the novel, it would be the lack of examples. Some diagrams would be helpful, particularly on the segments covering body, as it's difficult to envision the structures as he's describing them. Also, don't expect to dive too deeply into the functioning of every body system--the particulars are discerning and you are likely to get equal steps of the history behind the discoveries. This is not a bad thing, provided that you're expecting it.
In general, this is probably the hottest book about the topic, and a good entry point for further study in physiology, anatomy, human evolution, or medication.
~ Eric H Alan Download Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries 1st Edition
Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who is also known as the"black science man" on various online forums, for example reddit. Dr. Tyson's also got some hot internet memes styled such as the"we have a bad ass over here" meme. However, in real life he's the director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City and is a very accomplished astrophysicist. In a lot of ways, he is the Carl Sagan of our creation. If you have seen the TV series Cosmos on either PBS or Fox, then he's the new host for this revamped series which was hosted by Carl Sagan. He's very well known for his capacity to carry scientific theories and distill them into something that we can understand. I'm no scientist, so I want someone who understands these theories to explain them in a way that we can relate to.
This book is a selection of little essays that he's written for a variety of newspapers, magazines, and internet blogs. Death by Black Hole touches on a great deal of amazing scientific theories which are almost accepted by granted by a lot of people today, but it supplies a foundation for everything that we do in space or dealing with the cosmos. Dr. Tyson is great at taking these concepts and placing them in situations which we may understand as non-scientists full with comedy. An excellent illustration of this is from the article"Going Ballistic," where he says exactly what happens to a man who jumps through a hole dug through the middle of the earth. The older"what happens if you dig all of the way to China" quandary. He says,"Now comes the interesting part. Jump in. You now fall continuously in a weightless, free-fall state till you reach the planet's centre, where you inhale from the warmth of the iron center." He then proceeds to dismiss this complication and then talk about gravity and what happens as you go closer to and then further from a middle of mass.
Dr. Tyson is one of the best scientific minds of the generation, and his major contribution to science is the ability to contact the layman, which will be you and me, and help them understand why science is essential to today's society. So in the event that you would like a few laughs, and if you would like to learn about astrophysics, astronomy,"regular" physics, and the rest of the incredible things that occur in our cosmos, I would recommend reading Death by Black Hole.
~ Jean Katherine Baldridge Download The Genius of Birds Reprint Edition
The Genius of Birds, by Jennifer Ackerman is a gamechanger for the manner in which the curious reader will think concerning birds. Maybe you thought birds were adorable but not so bright, for instance. Get ready to change your mind while you read in chapter one about"007", a corbid (kind of crow out of New Caledonia), that goes through 8 measures, using tools, within two and a half minutes to get to a piece of food, following one evaluation of the puzzle. Various types of birds are very smart, in the manner which individuals are smart. The birds that take the longest to raise in the nest are the brightest and have the largest brains (together with the proper neurons). This section discusses the brilliance of some kinds of birds. Here you will find the instrument users and others, like the kees, who love clowning around and horseplay.
The writing by the writer Jennifer Ackerman is sometimes amazing ( as when she's describing the rainforest at nightfall),or laugh-out-loud funny (she discusses attempts by a bird biologist to quantify intelligence in his test subjects by disguising himself, wearing at different sessions: a kimono, a wig, sunglasses, or walking with a limp, or hopping. They constantly understood him). I had been totally rolling when I read this, considering Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther films. She's always fresh too, with new news on birds right up to this year. As things have changed dramatically in that which we know about birds within the past ten years, this publication is welcome as an overview, today. This is a book for bird fans of all kinds.
There's a part about the social aspect of birds, subtitled"Twitter". This is fascinating too. Also discussed is the way some kinds of birds instruct others in their particular"group" techniques they've been trained. , Incredibly, researchers have educated certain birds to open feeders at a special method. Then they could watch and track as their trained birds performed the tasks in the forests. The birds they had trained managed to train additional wild members to do precisely as they did, What collaborative little creatures!
Further on, you understand about vocal virtuosity. I didn't know that birds must be tutored to sing however. I understand this now, from this book.In this chapter you learn that one of Thomas Jefferson's favorite pets were his mockingbirds. Afterwards, when you see about Honey Child, a hand elevated mockingbird, your jaw will drop with amazement at the repertoire of his songs, which he'd increase and occasionally drop throughout the amount of his lifetime. You may learn this intricate process of vocal learning is termed as"advanced", since, it is done"our way", eg., the way humans teach their children, and how children learn to selectively speak. The male songbirds who have better tunes appeal to the females more, too.As the author writes,"searching for super-sexy syllables allows female canaries to rule out males with poor bilateral co-ordination" This is vital, if you are a lady canary!
Continue reading, through this award-winning author's book, to find out about birds who decorate:"the bird artist", birds that can map:"a mapping mind" and ultimately, sparrows:"sparrowville".
It is a book to curl up with at wintermonths, or to take along in your own cruise. It does not have photographs, just a few sketches of birds starting every chapter, but this is not the point of this publication. The Guru of Birds is about behaviors, patterns, alteration learning, which bird is the"world's dumbest"--yes, it has an offering for that, but maybe not the writer's (and I cracked up at that part!!!) , the significance of studying birds in their own natural environment to learn more and better understand them, and more. The Genius of Birds is a big read, but nothing in it's wasted on the prepared reader. I applaud Ackerman for taking me outside and also to all types of amazing places, when she composed this uplifting, extraordinary book about beautiful, beautiful critters.
~ Hollister Bulldawg Download Botany in a Day: The Patterns Method of Plant Identification 6th Edition
A couple of things first: I am a degreed botanist who had a 3 ring binder in which I had described the characteristics of each plant family found in California and virtually all plant families located in america. I dropped it during a move sometime past. I downloaded this book in 2006 to help avoid duplicating all that information again. I never looked in the book until this year when I decided to crucial out some weeds from the backyard. Though I found a couple of mistakes in the text (which only a taxonomist or morphologist would visit ), but overall this book replicated my three ring binder plus it added other information on use and toxicity. I've read it through several times and pick up small facts every moment. Sure that an untrained person is going to have some trouble using it without taking the opportunity to understand the fundamentals of a plant. With only a little effort this book will be very useful. And please be aware that the writer basically described the demographics of where this book would be most helpful: 85 percent in Montana (where he resides ) and 5 percent in Florida (where I guess he never lived).
Update 11/5/2012: Just found a gorgeous weed in the backyard. Used this publication to determine it was in the Solanum family. Unfortunately it's a genus which was not covered in the book. . .but the book was helpful in eliminating all of the other genera. Botany in a Day is extremely useful even when the genus is not present in the book!
~ LeegleechN Download The Feynman Lectures on Physics, boxed set: The New Millennium Edition
I have a college level history in physics and therefore are reading these to fill in gaps in my knowledge. I've learned many new things (3/4 of how through book 1); however I think it is worth stating a couple of potential problems that haven't been elucidated by other reviews. Finally I am happy that I downloaded the novels but I wouldn't recommend them to others without reservation.
To begin with, I don't believe these books are suitable for someone who doesn't yet have background in this material. They move very fast and don't spend enough time on any one subject to properly ingrain it in the mind. If you are trying to teach yourself from scratch, then I would recommend a conventional textbook over these assignments. If you do decide to go with them, you'll also have to download a nutritional supplement like"Exercises for the Feynman Lectures on Physics" because the book doesn't have any problem places.
Second, the books are showing their age. There were several points in which for example a 3d chart would have made things much clearer, but due to the constraints of the time it was not possible to provide such a figure. There was an entire chapter on numerical calculation that's interesting purely in a historical fashion today, as it teaches you the way calculation was done before the availability of pocket calculators. There were a few points where Feynman stated that something was not figured out at the time, and I was left wondering if we'd enhanced our understanding of it at the 50 years since. The fundamental material has not changed at all because Feynman gave the lectures, but there are still many small ways that the era of these books are a detriment.
Finally, I concur with all the other comments about hard to read glossy paper, small print, and inadequate use of space.
