I'm new to beekeeping and, in actuality, haven't even received anything to get started with yet. However, I am a little"old school" and would rather have a physical book than to continue moving online to find all of the information I needed. . .it's just in a lot of places to stay track.
I have had a couple of Dummies books through the last few years and had seen this one mentioned by numerous people and groups online, so I downloaded it. It's a fantastic reference. There are many specifics to beekeeping such as species, locales, hive kinds, etc. and this one comprises a bit about a lot of that to bear into account. It will stick to their own recommendation for absolute beginners though and so most of the information in it which focus kingdom.
I've heard quite a good deal in the book and it prompted me not to wait to start downloading certain items so that I'm prepared for my May bee nuc. I can see this book as a good"go-to" reference once I have concerns or questions going forward, with no issue. I still have a lot to learn, but I believe anybody starting out in beekeeping wants this book.

If you want to find out more about how the body works but do not need to read textbooks on anatomy and physiology, then this is the book for you. As Bryson writes,"We pass our presence within this warm Length of flesh and take it for granted." We're the product of three thousand years of evolutionary refinement, a biological system of unimagined complexity, and most people can't actually identify where the spleen is, or what it does.
If this publication does not pique your interest in the way your body works, then nothing probably will. Bryson takes the reader through each body system, describing the anatomy and physiology of all but also providing historical information, expert interviews, and biographical details about the pioneers of medical discovery. Bryson, as usual, writes in an informative and entertaining way, presenting information in smart ways (for example, when he states that a portion of your cerebral cortex the size of a grain of sand can hold 1.2 billion copies of the publication.) The book is full of calculations and analogies like this to help the reader better contextualize the information.
I also appreciate how Bryson does not mindlessly repeat the cliches we consistently here without performing his study. It turns out that these announcements, among many others, are untrue, and Bryson shows you why. He does not take anything for granted and researches all of such claims.
You'll also come to understand--not just how much you do not understand about the body--but also how much of the body nobody understands. The human anatomy is unfathomably complex, and many locations and functions remain mysterious.
If I had to say anything negative about the book, it would be the absence of examples. Some diagrams would be helpful, especially on the sections covering anatomy, as it is difficult to envision the structures as he's describing them. Also, don't expect to dive too deeply to the functioning of every body system--the details are selective and you are likely to receive equal measures of the background behind the discoveries. This isn't a bad thing, provided that you're expecting it.
In general, this may be the best popular book on the subject, and a fantastic entry point for further study in physiology, anatomy, human evolution, or medicine.

However, in real life he's the director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City and is an extremely accomplished astrophysicist. In a great deal of ways, he's the Carl Sagan of our creation. In case you've seen the TV series Cosmos on PBS or Fox, then he's the new host for this revamped series which was hosted by Carl Sagan. He is very well-known for his ability to carry scientific theories and distill them into something which we are able to understand. Dr. Tyson is one of the finest scientific minds of the creation, and his major contribution to science is the ability to contact the layman, which is you and me, and help them understand why science is so important to today's society. So in the event that you want a few laughs, and if you would like to learn about astrophysics, astronomy,"regular" physics, and the rest of the incredible things that happen in our cosmos, then I would suggest reading Death by Black Hole.

There's a section about the social part of birds, subtitled"Twitter". This is fascinating also. Also discussed is how some kinds of birds instruct others in their particular"group" techniques they have been trained. , Incredibly, researchers have educated certain birds to open feeders in a special method. Then they were able to watch and track as their trained birds performed the jobs in the woods. The birds they had trained was able to train other wild members to do exactly as they did, What collaborative little creatures!
Further , you understand about vocal virtuosity. I especially love bird song, as I find it incredibly uplifting. I didn't understand that birds have to be tutored to sing yet. I understand this today, from this book.In this chapter you understand that one of Thomas Jefferson's favorite pets were his mockingbirds. Afterwards,when you read about Honey Child, a hand raised mockingbird, your jaw will fall with amazement in the repertoire of his songs, which he would add to and occasionally drop throughout the length of his lifetime. Woodpeckers, wrens, jays, you name it, Honey Child is worth the read! You will learn that this complicated process of vocal learning is termed as"complex", because, it is done"our way", eg., the way humans teach their kids, and the way kids learn to selectively speak.The male songbirds who have improved songs appeal to the females more, too.As the author writes,"searching for super-sexy syllables enables female canaries to rule out men with poor bilateral co-ordination" This is vital, if you are a lady canary!
Continue reading, through this award author's book, to learn about birds that decorate:"the bird artist", birds that can map:"a mapping mind" and finally, sparrows:"sparrowville".
It is a book to curl up with in wintermonths, or to take along on your cruise. It doesn't really have photographs, just a couple of sketches of birds starting each chapter, but this isn't the point of this publication. The Genius of Birds is about behaviours, routines, alteration learning, which bird would be the"world's dumbest"--yesit has an offering for this, but not the author's (and I cracked up at that part!!!) , the significance of studying birds in their own natural surroundings to learn more and better understand them, and more. The Genius of Birds is a significant read, but nothing in it's wasted on the prepared reader. I applaud Ackerman for taking me outside and also to all types of amazing places, when she composed this uplifting, extraordinary novel about beautiful, beautiful birds.

A couple of things : I am a degreed botanist who had a 3 ring binder in which I'd clarified the characteristics of every plant family discovered in California and almost all plant families found in america. I lost it during a movement sometime ago. I downloaded this book in 2006 to help avoid duplicating all of that info again. I never looked in the book until this year once I made a decision to crucial out some weeds in the garden. Though I discovered a couple of errors in the text (which only a taxonomist or morphologist would visit ), but overall this book duplicated my three ring binder plus it included other information on usage and toxicity. I have read it through several times and pick up little details each moment. Sure an untrained person will have some difficulty using it without first taking the time to understand the fundamentals of a plant. Nothing is free. With just a little effort this publication will be quite helpful. And please note that the author essentially described the demographics of where this book would be helpful: 85% in Montana (where he lives) and 5% in Florida (where I figure he never lived). Even the West, Midwest, and Northeast are well covered.
Update 11/5/2012: Just found a beautiful weed from the backyard. Used this book to determine it had been in the Solanum family. Unfortunately it's a genus that wasn't covered in the publication. . Double checked my results by using the Calphotos web site and sure enough there it was. Botany in a Day is extremely useful even when the genus is not present in the book!

I have a school level background in mathematics and am reading these to fill in gaps in my knowledge. I have learned lots of new things (3/4 of the way through book 1); however I think it might be worth stating a couple of potential issues that haven't been elucidated by additional reviews. Ultimately I'm happy that I downloaded the novels but I would not suggest them to others without reservation.
First, I don't believe these books are acceptable for someone who doesn't yet have background in this material. They move very fast and do not spend enough time on any 1 subject to properly ingrain it in the mind. If you are attempting to teach yourself from scratch, I would advise a conventional textbook over these assignments. Should you decide to go with them, you will also need to download a supplement like"Exercises for the Feynman Lectures on Physics" since the book does not have some problem places.
Secondly, the novels are showing their age. There were a few points in which for instance a 3d chart would have made things much clearer, but due to the constraints of the time it wasn't possible to supply such a guess. There was an whole chapter on numerical calculation that's interesting purely at a historic fashion now, as it teaches you how calculation was completed before the access to pocket calculators. There were several points where Feynman said that something wasn't figured out at the time, and I was left wondering when we had enhanced our understanding of it at the 50 years since. The basic material hasn't changed at all because Feynman gave the lectures, but there are still many small ways in which the age of these books are a detriment.
Finally, I agree with all the other comments about difficult to browse glossy paper, small print, and inadequate utilization of space.
