I'm brand new to beekeeping and, in actuality, haven't even received anything to begin with yet. I downloaded another beginner's book before this one and it was a bit too basic. But, I am a bit"old school" and prefer to have a physical novel than to keep on going online to find all the information I needed. . .it's just in a lot of places to stay track.
I have had a few Dummies books over the years and had seen this one mentioned by several people and groups online, so I downloaded it. It is a great reference. There are several particulars to beekeeping like species, locales, hive kinds, etc. and that one includes at least a bit about a lot of that to bear under account. It does stick to their recommendation for complete beginners though and so most of the information in it that focus realm.
I have heard quite a lot from the novel and it prompted me to not wait to begin downloading certain items so I'm ready for my May bee nuc. I can see this book as a great"go-to" mention once I have concerns or questions going forward, with no issue. I still have a lot to learn, but I believe anyone starting out in beekeeping needs this book.

If you want to learn more about how the body works but do not need to read textbooks on human anatomy and physiology, then this is the book for you. As Bryson writes,"We pass our presence within this warm wobble of flesh and yet take it for granted." We are the product of three thousand decades of evolutionary refinement, a biological system of unimagined complexity, and most of us can't even identify where the spleen is, or exactly what it does.
If this publication doesn't pique your interest in how your system works, then nothing probably will. Bryson takes the reader through each body , describing the anatomy and structure of each, but also providing historical information, expert interviews, and biographical details on the pioneers of medical discovery. Bryson, as usual, writes in an informative and entertaining way, presenting information in clever ways (for example, when he states that a portion of your cerebral cortex that the size of a grain of sand could hold 1.2 billion copies of the publication.) The book is filled with calculations and analogies like this to help the reader better contextualize the information.
I also appreciate how Bryson does not mindlessly repeat the cliches we always here without performing his research. It's commonly stated that we only use 10 percent of our brains, or that our own body includes 10 times as numerous bacterial cells as individual cells. It turns out that these announcements, among others, are false, and Bryson shows you why. He doesn't take anything for granted and researches all such claims.
You will also come to understandnot just how much you really do not understand about your system --but also how much of your body nobody understands. The human anatomy is unfathomably complex, and many locations and functions remain cryptic.
If I had to say anything negative about the book, it could be the absence of examples. Some diagrams would be helpful, especially on the segments covering body, as it's difficult to visualize the structures as he's describing them. Also, don't expect to dive too deeply to the functioning of every body --the particulars are selective and you're going to get equal steps of the background behind the discoveries. This is not a bad thing, provided that you are expecting it.
Overall, this may be the hottest book about the subject, and a fantastic entry point for further research in anatomy, physiology, human evolution, or medication.

Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who's also known as the"black science guy" on various online forums, such as reddit. Dr. Tyson's also got some hot online memes styled such as the"we have a bad ass over here" meme. However, in real life he's the director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City and is an extremely accomplished astrophysicist. In a lot of ways, he is the Carl Sagan of our creation. In case you have seen the TV show Cosmos on PBS or Fox, then he's the new host for this revamped series which was hosted by Carl Sagan. He's very well known for his capacity to take scientific theories and distill them into something which we are able to understand. I'm no scientist, so I need someone who understands these theories to explain them in a way which we can relate to.
This book is a selection of small essays that he is written for a variety of newspapers, magazines, and internet blogs. Death by Black Hole touches on a lot of amazing scientific concepts that are almost accepted by awarded by a lot of people today, but it provides a foundation for everything that we do in distance or dealing with the cosmos. Dr. Tyson is great at taking these concepts and placing them in situations which we may understand as non-scientists complete with comedy. An excellent example of this is from the essay"Moving Ballistic," where he states exactly what happens to a man who jumps through a hole dug through the middle of the planet. The older"what happens when you dig all of the way to China" quandary. He states,"Now comes the interesting part. Jump in. You now fall continuously in a weightless, free-fall country till you get to the earth's center, where you vaporize from the heat of the iron core." Then he goes on to dismiss this complication and talk about gravity and what occurs as you go closer to and then farther from a center of mass.
Dr. Tyson is one of the finest scientific minds of our creation, and his major contribution to science is his ability to connect with the layman, that will be you and me, and help them understand why science is so important to today's society. Therefore, in the event that you want a few laughs, and if you want to know about astrophysics, astronomy,"routine" physics, and all the other amazing things that happen within our cosmos, I would suggest reading Death by Black Hole.

The Guru of Birds, by Jennifer Ackerman is a gamechanger for the manner by which the reader will think about birds. Perhaps you thought birds were cute but not very bright, for instance. Get ready to change your mind when you read in chapter one about"007", a corbid (type of crow out of New Caledonia), who goes through 8 steps, using tools, within two and a half an hour to get into a part of food, following one evaluation of this mystery. Various types of birds are very smart, in the way which humans are smart. The birds that take the longest to increase in the nest are the smartest and have the biggest brains (together with the appropriate neurons). This segment discusses the brilliance of some kinds of birds.Here you'll find the tool users and others, like the kees, who love clowning around and horseplay. As an illustration of this, the writer mentions a kee who was seen rolling up a doormat and pushing it down a flight of steps.
The writing by the author Jennifer Ackerman is sometimes beautiful ( as when she's describing the rainforest at nightfall),or laugh-out-loud humorous (she discusses attempts by a bird biologist to measure intelligence in his test subjects by disguising himself, wearing at different sessions: a kimono, a wig,sunglasses, or walking with a limp, or hopping. They constantly understood him). I had been totally rolling when I read this, considering Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movies. She's always refreshing too, with fresh information on birds right up to this season. As things have changed dramatically in what we know about birds within the past ten decades, this publication is welcome as a summary, today. This is a book for bird fans of all kinds.
There's a section about the societal part of birds, subtitled"twitter". This is fascinating too. The reader will learn about how different kinds of birds bond, and the way in which they teach their young to perform certain vital actions they will eventually have to endure. Also discussed is how some kinds of birds teach others in their "group" techniques they have been trained. , Incredibly, researchers have taught certain birds to open feeders at a special method. Then they could watch and track as their trained birds performed the jobs in the forests. The birds they had trained was able to train additional wild members to do exactly as they did, What collaborative little creatures!
Further , you learn about vocal virtuosity. I especially love bird song, as I find it amazingly uplifting. I didn't know that birds must be tutored to sing yet. I understand this today, from this book.In this chapter you learn that among Thomas Jefferson's favorite pets were his mockingbirds. Afterwards,when you see about Honey Child, a hand elevated mockingbird, your jaw will drop with amazement in the repertoire of his songs, which he'd increase and occasionally drop throughout the amount of his life. Woodpeckers, wrens, jays, you name it, Honey Child is well worth the read! You may learn that this intricate process of vocal learning is termed as"advanced", since, it is done"our way", eg., how humans teach their kids, and how children learn to selectively speak.The male songbirds who have better tunes appeal to the females longer, too.As the author writes,"Listening for super-sexy syllables enables female canaries to rule out males with poor bilateral co-ordination" That is vital, if you're a lady canary!
Read on, through this award-winning writer's book, to find out about birds that decorate:"the bird artist", birds who will map:"a mapping thoughts" and ultimately, sparrows:"sparrowville".
It is a book to curl up with in the wintermonths, or even to take along in your cruise. It does not really have photographs, only a couple of sketches of birds starting each chapter, but this is not the purpose of this book. The Genius of Birds is all about behaviours, routines, alteration learning, which bird would be the"world's dumbest"--yes, it has an offering for this, but maybe not the writer's (and I cracked up at that part!!!) , the significance of studying birds in their own natural surroundings to learn more and better understand them, and more. The Genius of Birds is a significant read, but nothing in it is wasted on the willing reader. I applaud Ackerman for shooting me outside and to all sorts of amazing places, when she composed this uplifting, extraordinary novel about beautiful, amazing critters.

A few things : I am a degreed botanist who had a three ring binder in which I'd described the characteristics of each plant family found in California and virtually all plant families located in america. I dropped it during a move sometime ago. I downloaded this publication in 2006 to help avoid duplicating all of that information again. I never looked in the book until this year when I decided to crucial out some weeds from the garden. Although I discovered a couple of mistakes in the text (which merely a taxonomist or morphologist would visit ), but overall this publication duplicated my three ring binder plus it added other information on usage and toxicity. I have read it through a few times and pick up small facts each time. Sure that an untrained person will have some trouble using it without first taking the opportunity to understand the basics of a plant. With only a little effort this publication will be very helpful. And please note that the writer essentially described the demographics of where this book would be most helpful: 85 percent in Montana (where he resides ) and 5 percent in Florida (where I guess that he never lived). Even the West, Midwest, and Northeast are nicely covered.
Update 11/5/2012: Just found a beautiful weed in the backyard. Used this publication to determine it had been from the Solanum family. Unfortunately it's a genus that was not covered in the publication. . .but the book was helpful in removing all of the other genera. Double checked my results by employing the Calphotos web site and sure enough there it was. Botany in a Day is extremely useful even when the genus is not within the book!

I've learned many new things already (3/4 of the way through book 1); nonetheless I think it might be worth saying a few potential problems that have not been elucidated by additional reviews. Ultimately I am happy that I downloaded the novels but I would not suggest them to others without reservation.
First, I do not believe these books are acceptable for someone who does not already have background in the material. They move very fast and don't spend enough time on any one subject to properly ingrain it in the mind. If you're trying to teach yourself from scratch, then I would advise a conventional textbook over these lectures. Should you decide to go with these, you'll also have to download a supplement like"Exercises for the Feynman Lectures on Physics" since the publication doesn't have any problem places.
Secondly, the books are showing their age. There were a few points in which for instance a 3d chart would have made things much clearer, but due to the constraints of this time it wasn't possible to provide such a figure. There was an whole chapter on numerical calculation which is interesting purely at a historical fashion now, as it teaches you how calculation was done before the availability of pocket calculators. There were several points where Feynman said that something was not figured out in the time, and I was left wondering if we'd enhanced our understanding of it in the 50 years since. The fundamental material has not changed at all because Feynman gave the lectures, but there are still many small ways in which the era of the novels are a detriment.
Finally, I agree with all the other comments about difficult to browse glossy paper, small print, and poor utilization of space.
