I am new to beekeeping and, in fact, have not even received anything to get started with yet. I downloaded yet another beginner's book before this one and it was a bit too basic. However, I am a little"old school" and prefer to have a tangible book than to keep on going online to find all of the information I needed. . .it's just in a lot of areas to keep track.
I've had a few Dummies books through the years and had seen this one mentioned by several individuals and groups online, so I downloaded it. It's a fantastic reference. There are many specifics to beekeeping such as species, locales, hive types, etc. and that one comprises at least a little about a lot of that to bear into consideration. It will stick to their recommendation for absolute beginners though and so most of the information in it which focus realm.
I have learned quite a lot from the novel and it prompted me to not wait to begin downloading certain items so that I'm ready for my May bee nuc. I can see this novel as a great"go-to" mention once I have questions or concerns moving forward, with no issue. I still have a lot to learn, but I think anybody starting out in beekeeping wants this book.

If you want to find out more about how the body works but don't want to read textbooks on anatomy and physiology, then this is the book for you. Since Bryson writes,"We pass our presence within this warm wobble of flesh and yet take it entirely for granted." We are the product of three thousand decades of evolutionary refinement, a biological system of unimagined complexity, and yet most of us can't even recognize where the spleen is, or what it does.
If this book does not pique your interest in how your system works, then nothing probably will. Bryson takes the reader through each body , describing the anatomy and physiology of all but also providing historical information, expert interviews, and biographical details on the pioneers of medical discovery. Bryson, as usual, writes in an informative and interesting way, presenting information in clever ways (for instance, when he states that a portion of your cerebral cortex the size of a grain of sand can hold 1.2 billion copies of this publication.)
I also appreciate how Bryson does not mindlessly repeat the cliches we consistently here without doing his study. It turns out that these statements, among many others, are untrue, and Bryson shows you why. He does not take anything for granted and researches all such claims.
You'll also come to understandnot only how much you don't understand about your system --but also how much of your body nobody understands. The human anatomy is unfathomably complex, and many locations and functions remain cryptic.
If I had to say anything negative about the novel, it could be the lack of examples. Some diagrams would be helpful, particularly on the segments covering body, as it's hard to visualize the structures as he is describing them. Also, don't expect to dive deeper to the functioning of every body --the details are discerning and you are likely to get equal measures of the history behind the discoveries. This isn't a bad thing, as long as you are expecting it.
In general, this may be the best popular book about the subject, and a good entry point for additional study in anatomy, physiology, human development, or medicine.

Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who is also known as the"black science guy" on various online forums, for example reddit. However, in real life he's the director of the Hayden Planetarium in nyc and is a very accomplished astrophysicist. In a lot of ways, he is the Carl Sagan of our generation. In case you've seen the TV series Cosmos on either PBS or Fox, then he's the new host for this revamped show which used to be hosted by Carl Sagan. He's very well known for his ability to carry scientific theories and distill them into something that we can understand. I am no scientist, so I need someone who understands these theories to explain them in a manner that we are able to relate to.
This publication is a choice of small essays that he is written for various newspapers, magazines, and online blogs. Death by Black Hole touches a lot of amazing scientific theories which are almost accepted by awarded by a lot of people today, but it supplies a foundation for everything that we do in distance or dealing with the cosmos. Dr. Tyson is excellent at taking such concepts and putting them in situations that we can understand as non-scientists complete with humor. An excellent illustration of this is in the essay"Going Ballistic," where he says exactly what happens to a man who jumps through a hole dug through the center of the planet. The older"what happens if you dig all the way to China" quandary. He says,"Now comes the fun part. Jump in. At this point you fall in a weightless, free-fall state until you get to the earth's centre, where you vaporize from the warmth of the iron core." Then he goes on to ignore that complication and talk about gravity and what occurs as you go closer to and then further from a middle of mass.
Dr. Tyson is one of the finest scientific minds of the creation, and his major contribution to science is the ability to contact the layman, which will be you and me, and help them understand why science is essential to today's society. So in the event that you want a few laughs, and if you want to learn about astrophysics, astronomy,"regular" physics, and all the other incredible things that occur within our cosmos, I would suggest reading Death by Black Hole.

The birds they'd trained managed to train other wild members to perform exactly as they did, What collaborative little creatures!
Further , you learn about vocal virtuosity. I didn't know that birds must be tutored to sing however. I understand this now, from that book.In this chapter you understand that one of Thomas Jefferson's favorite pets were his mockingbirds. Afterwards,when you read about Honey Child, a hand raised mockingbird, your jaw will fall with amazement at the repertoire of his tunes, which he would add to and sometimes drop throughout the amount of his lifetime. You will learn that this intricate process of vocal learning is termed"complex", since, it is done"our way", eg., the way humans teach their kids, and the way children learn to selectively speak.The male songbirds that have improved songs appeal to the females longer, too.As the writer writes,"searching for super-sexy syllables allows female canaries to rule out males with poor bilateral co-ordination" That is vital, if you are a lady canary!

This is a book to curl up with at winter, or even to take along on your cruise. It does not have photographs, only a few sketches of birds starting every chapter, but this is not the purpose of the book. The Genius of Birds is all about behaviours, routines, alteration learning, that bird is the"world's dumbest"--yes, it has an offering for that, but not the writer's (and I cracked up in that part!!!) , the importance of studying birds in their natural environment to learn more and better understand them, and plenty more. The Genius of Birds is a significant read, but nothing in it's wasted on the willing reader. I applaud Ackerman for taking me outdoors and also to all sorts of amazing places, when she wrote this uplifting, amazing book about beautiful, amazing critters.

A couple of things first: I am a degreed botanist who had a 3 ring binder where I had clarified the qualities of each plant family found in California and virtually all plant families located in america. I dropped it during a move sometime ago. I downloaded this publication in 2006 to help prevent copying all of that info again. I never looked in the book until this year once I made a decision to crucial out some weeds from the garden. Though I discovered a couple of errors in the text (that only a taxonomist or morphologist would visit ), but overall this book replicated my three ring binder plus it added other information on usage and toxicity. I have read it through a few times and pick up little facts every time. Sure that an untrained person is going to have some trouble using it without taking the time to understand the fundamentals of a plant. Nothing is free. With only a little effort this publication will be quite useful. And please be aware that the writer essentially described the demographics of where this book would be helpful: 85% in Montana (where he resides ) and 5% in Florida (where I guess that he never dwelt ).
Update 11/5/2012: Only found a beautiful weed in the backyard. Used this book to determine it had been in the Solanum family. Unfortunately it is a genus that wasn't covered in the book. . Using a Jepson manual and only the section on Solanums, I was able to key it out to Nicandra physalodes (Apple of Peru). Double checked my results by employing the Calphotos web site and sure enough there it was. Botany in a Day is very helpful even when the genus is not within the book!

I have a school level background in mathematics and therefore are reading these to fill in gaps in my knowledge. I've learned lots of new things (3/4 of how through book 1); nonetheless I think it is worth saying a few potential issues that have not been elucidated by other reviews. Ultimately I'm happy that I downloaded the books but I would not suggest them to others without reservation.
First, I do not think these books are acceptable for someone who does not yet have background in the material. They move very quickly and don't spend enough time on any one topic to properly ingrain it in the mind. If you are attempting to teach yourself from scratch, then I would advise a traditional textbook over these lectures. If you do decide to go with them, you'll also need to download a nutritional supplement such as"Exercises for the Feynman Lectures on Physics" since the book does not have some problem sets.
Secondly, the books are showing their age. There were several points where for instance a 3d graph would have made things much clearer, but due to the limitations of the time it wasn't possible to supply such a guess. There was an entire chapter on numerical calculation which is interesting purely at a historical manner today, as it teaches you the way calculation was completed before the access to pocket calculators. There were several points where Feynman said that something wasn't figured out at the time, and that I was left wondering when we'd enhanced our understanding of it at the 50 years since. The fundamental material hasn't changed at all because Feynman gave the lectures, but there are still many small ways in which the age of these books are a detriment.
Finally, I agree with all the other comments about hard to browse glossy paper, small print, and poor utilization of space.
