~ Jon Download Beekeeping For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyle)) 4th Edition
I'm brand new to beekeeping and, in actuality, have not even received anything to get started with yet. I downloaded yet another beginner's book before this one and it was a bit too basic. However, I'm a bit"old school" and would rather have a physical book than to keep on moving online to find all the information I wanted. . .it's only in a lot of areas to stay track.
It is a fantastic reference. There are many specifics to beekeeping like species, locales, hive types, etc. and this one includes at least a little about a lot of that to keep into consideration. It does stick to their own recommendation for complete beginners though and so most of the information in it that concentrate kingdom.
I've heard quite a good deal from the novel and it prompted me not to wait to start downloading particular items so that I'm ready for my May bee nuc. I can see this novel as a good"go-to" reference when I have concerns or questions moving forward, with no matter. I still have a ton to learn, but I believe anyone starting out in beekeeping needs this publication.

If you'd like to find out more about the way the body works but don't need to read textbooks on human anatomy and physiology, then this is the book for you. Since Bryson writes,"We pass our existence in this warm Length of flesh and take it entirely for granted." We are the product of three thousand decades of evolutionary refinement, a biological machine of unimagined complexity, and most of us can not actually recognize where the spleen is, or what it will.
If this publication does not pique your curiosity in how your body works, then nothing probably will. Bryson takes the reader through each body , describing the anatomy and structure of all but also providing historical information, expert interviews, and biographical details on the leaders of medical discovery. Bryson, as usual, writes in an informative and entertaining manner, presenting information in clever ways (for instance, when he states that a part of your cerebral cortex that the size of a grain of sand could hold 1.2 billion copies of the book.) The publication is filled with calculations and analogies like this to help the reader better contextualize the information.
I also appreciate how Bryson doesn't mindlessly repeat the cliches we consistently here without doing his study. It is commonly stated that we only use 10 percent of our brains, or that our own body contains 10 times as many bacterial cells as individual cells. It turns out that these announcements, among many others, are untrue, and Bryson shows you . He doesn't take anything for granted and researches all such claims.
You'll also come to understandnot just how much you really do not understand about your system --but also how a lot of your body nobody understands. The human anatomy is unfathomably complex, and many areas and works remain cryptic.
If I had to say anything negative about the book, it could be the absence of illustrations. Some diagrams could be helpful, especially on the sections covering body, as it is difficult to visualize the structures as he is describing them. Also, don't expect to dive too deeply to the functioning of each body --the details are discerning and you're likely to get equal steps of the background behind the discoveries. This is not a bad thing, provided that you're expecting it.
Overall, this is probably the best popular book about the subject, and a good entry point for further research in anatomy, physiology, human development, or medication.

Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who's also referred to as the"black science guy" on various online forums, such as reddit. Dr. Tyson's also got some hot internet memes styled after him such as the"we have a bad ass over here" meme. Nevertheless, in real life he is the director of the Hayden Planetarium in nyc and is a very accomplished astrophysicist. In a great deal of ways, he's the Carl Sagan of our generation. If you've seen the TV series Cosmos on PBS or Fox, then he is the new host for this revamped show which used to be hosted by Carl Sagan. He's very well known for his ability to carry scientific concepts and distill them into something which we can understand. I'm no scientist, so I need someone who understands these theories to explain them in a manner which we are able to relate to.
This publication is a selection of little essays that he's written for various newspapers, magazines, and internet blogs. Death by Black Hole touches a lot of amazing scientific concepts that are almost accepted by awarded by a great deal of people now, but it supplies a foundation for everything that we do in space or addressing the cosmos. Dr. Tyson is great at taking these theories and placing them in situations that we can understand as non-scientists complete with comedy. An excellent example of this is from the essay"Going Ballistic," where he says what happens to a man who jumps through a hole dug through the center of the planet. The older"what happens when you dig all the way to China" quandary. He says,"Now comes the fun part. Jump in. You now fall continuously in a weightless, free-fall country till you get to the earth's center, where you inhale in the warmth of the iron core." Then he goes on to ignore that complication and then talk about gravity and what happens as you move closer to and then further from a center of mass.
Dr. Tyson is one of the finest scientific minds of our generation, and his major contribution to science is his ability to contact the layman, that is you and me, and help them understand why science is essential to today's society. Therefore, if you want a few laughs, and if you want to learn about astrophysics, astronomy,"regular" physics, and all the other incredible things that happen within our cosmos, then I would recommend reading Death by Black Hole.

As things have changed radically in what we understand about birds over the previous ten decades, this book is welcome as an overview, now. This is a publication for bird fans of all kinds.
There's a section about the societal part of birds, subtitled"Twitter". This is intriguing too. Also discussed is how some kinds of birds teach others in their particular"group" techniques they have been trained. , Incredibly, researchers have educated certain critters to open feeders in a distinctive manner. Then they could watch and track as their trained birds performed the tasks in the woods. The birds they'd trained managed to train other wild members to do exactly as they did, What collaborative small creatures!
Further , you understand about vocal virtuosity. I especially love bird song, as I find it incredibly uplifting. I didn't understand that birds have to be tutored to sing however. I understand this today, from that book.In this chapter you learn that one of Thomas Jefferson's favourite pets were his mockingbirds. Later,when you see about Honey Child, a hand raised mockingbird, your jaw will fall with amazement at the repertoire of his tunes, which he would add to and sometimes drop throughout the amount of his life. You will learn this complicated process of vocal learning is termed as"advanced", since, it is done"our way", eg., how humans teach their kids, and the way children learn to speak.The male songbirds who have improved songs appeal to the females longer, too.As the writer writes,"Listening for super-sexy syllables enables female canaries to rule out men with poor bilateral co-ordination" That is important, if you're a lady canary!
Read on, through this award writer's book, to find out about birds who decorate:"the bird artist", birds that can map:"a mapping thoughts" and ultimately, sparrows:"sparrowville".
It is a book to curl up with in the wintermonths, or to take along on your own cruise. It does not have photos, only a few sketches of birds starting every chapter, but that isn't the purpose of the publication. The Guru of Birds is all about behaviours, patterns, reversal learning, which bird is the"world's dumbest"--yes, it has an offering for this, but maybe not the writer's (and I cracked up in the part!!!) , the significance of studying birds in their own natural surroundings to find out more and better understand them, and more. The Genius of Birds is a big read, but nothing in it is wasted on the prepared reader. I applaud Ackerman for taking me outside and to all sorts of amazing places, when she composed this uplifting, amazing book about beautiful, beautiful critters.

A couple of things first: I am a degreed botanist who had a three ring binder in which I had described the characteristics of every plant family discovered in California and virtually all plant families found in the US. I dropped it during a move sometime past. I downloaded this book in 2006 to help avoid duplicating all that information again. I never looked in the book until this year when I decided to crucial out some weeds from the backyard. Though I found a few mistakes in the text (which merely a taxonomist or morphologist would visit ), but overall this book duplicated my three ring binder plus it included other information on use and toxicity. I have read it through a few times and pick up little details every moment. Sure an untrained person will have some trouble using it without first taking the opportunity to understand the basics of a plant. Nothing is free. With just a little effort this publication will be very helpful. And please note that the author basically described the demographics of where this book would be helpful: 85% in Montana (where he resides ) and 5 percent in Florida (where I guess he never lived).
Update 11/5/2012: Just found a beautiful weed from the backyard. Used this book to determine it had been from the Solanum family. Unfortunately it's a genus that was not covered in the publication. . Botany in a Day is extremely useful even when the genus is not present in the book!

I have learned lots of new things (3/4 of the way through book 1); nonetheless I think it might be worth saying a few potential problems that have not been elucidated by other reviews. Finally I'm happy that I downloaded the books but I would not suggest them to others without reservation.
First, I do not believe these books are suitable for someone who does not yet have background in this content. They move very fast and don't spend enough time on any 1 topic to properly ingrain it in the mind. If you're attempting to teach yourself from scratch, then I would recommend a traditional textbook over these lectures. If you do decide to go with these, you will also need to download a supplement such as"Exercises for the Feynman Lectures on Physics" since the book doesn't have any problem sets.
Secondly, the books are showing their age. There were several points where for instance a 3d graph would have made things much clearer, but due to the limitations of the time it was not possible to supply such a figure. There was an whole chapter on numerical calculation which is interesting purely at a historic fashion now, as it teaches you how calculation was completed before the availability of pocket calculators. There were a few points where Feynman said that something was not figured out at the moment, and I was left wondering if we'd enhanced our understanding of it in the 50 years since. The basic material hasn't changed at all because Feynman gave the lectures, but there are still many little ways that the era of these books are a detriment.
Finally, I agree with all the other comments about hard to read glossy paper, small print, and inadequate use of space.
