I'm brand new to beekeeping and, in actuality, haven't even received anything to get started with yet. I downloaded yet another beginner's book before this one and it was a bit too basic. But, I'm a bit"old school" and prefer to have a physical novel than to continue going online to find all the information I needed. . .it's just in a lot of places to stay track.
I have had a few Dummies books over the years and had seen this one mentioned by numerous people and groups online, so I downloaded it. It is a great reference. There are many particulars to beekeeping like species, locales, hive types, etc. and that one comprises at least a little about lots of that to keep into consideration. It will stick to their own recommendation for absolute beginners though and so the majority of the information in it that focus kingdom.
I have learned quite a good deal from the book and it prompted me to not wait to start downloading certain items so I'm ready for my May bee nuc. I can see this book as a great"go-to" reference once I have concerns or questions moving forward, with no issue. I have a ton to learn, but I believe anybody starting out in beekeeping needs this book.

If you'd like to learn more about how the body works but do not want to read textbooks on anatomy and physiology, this is the book for you. As Bryson writes,"We pass our presence within this warm Length of flesh and yet take it for granted." We are the product of three billion decades of evolutionary refinement, a biological system of unimagined complexity, and most people can not even identify where the spleen is, or exactly what it will.
If this publication does not pique your curiosity in the way your system works, then nothing probably will. Bryson, as usual, writes in an informative and entertaining manner, presenting information in smart ways (for example, when he says that a part of your cerebral cortex that the size of a grain of sand could hold 1.2 billion copies of the publication.) The publication is full of calculations and analogies such as this to help the reader better contextualize the information.
I also appreciate how Bryson doesn't mindlessly repeat the cliches we consistently here without doing his research. It is commonly stated we only use 10 percent of our brains, or that our own body includes 10 times as numerous bacterial cells as individual cells. It turns out that these statements, among others, are untrue, and Bryson shows you . He doesn't take anything for granted and researches all such claims.
You'll also come to understand--not only how much you do not understand about the body--but also how much of your body nobody understands. The human anatomy is unfathomably complicated, and lots of areas and works remain cryptic.
If I needed to say anything negative about the book, it would be the absence of illustrations. Some diagrams could be helpful, especially on the segments covering anatomy, as it is hard to visualize the structures as he is describing them. Also, don't expect to dive too deeply to the functioning of each body --the particulars are discerning and you are likely to get equal steps of the history behind the discoveries. This is not a bad thing, as long as you are expecting it.
In general, this may be the best popular book about the subject, and a good entry point for further study in physiology, anatomy, human development, or medication.

Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who is also known as the"black science man" on various online forums, for example reddit. However, in real life he's the director of the Hayden Planetarium in nyc and is an extremely accomplished astrophysicist. In a great deal of ways, he is the Carl Sagan of the creation. Dr. Tyson is one of the best scientific minds of our generation, and his major contribution to science is the ability to contact the layman, that is you and me, and help them understand why science is so important to today's society. So if you want a few laughs, and if you would like to know about astrophysics, astronomy,"regular" physics, and all the other amazing things that occur in our cosmos, then I would suggest reading Death by Black Hole.

There is a part about the social part of birds, subtitled"Twitter". This is intriguing too. The reader will learn about how different types of birds bond, and how they teach their young to perform certain important actions they'll gradually have to survive. Also discussed is how some kinds of birds instruct others in their particular"group" techniques they've been trained. , Incredibly, scientists have taught certain birds to open feeders in a distinctive method. Then they could watch and track as their trained birds performed the tasks in the forests. The birds they'd trained managed to train additional wild members to perform exactly as they did, What collaborative little creatures!
Further on, you understand about vocal virtuosity. I especially love bird song, as I find it incredibly uplifting. I didn't understand that birds have to be tutored to sing however. Read on, through this award author's book, to learn about birds that decorate:"the bird artist", birds that will map:"a mapping mind" and finally, sparrows:"sparrowville".
It is a book to curl up with in the wintermonths, or to take along in your own cruise. It doesn't really have photographs, just a few sketches of birds opening each chapter, but this is not the purpose of this book. The Genius of Birds is all about behaviours, routines, reversal learning, that bird is the"world's dumbest"--yes, it has an offering for this, but maybe not the writer's (and I cracked up in that part!!!) , the significance of studying birds in their own natural surroundings to learn more and better understand them, and more. The Genius of Birds is a significant read, but nothing in it's wasted on the prepared reader. I applaud Ackerman for taking me outside and to all sorts of amazing places, when she wrote this uplifting, extraordinary novel about beautiful, amazing birds.

A few things first: I am a degreed botanist who had a 3 ring binder where I'd clarified the characteristics of each plant family discovered in California and almost all plant families located in the US. I lost it during a move sometime past. I downloaded this publication in 2006 to help avoid duplicating all that information again. I never looked in the book until this year once I decided to crucial out some weeds from the garden. Although I discovered a couple of errors in the text (that merely a taxonomist or morphologist would visit ), but overall this book duplicated my three ring binder plus it included other information on usage and toxicity. I have read it through several times and pick up small details each time. Sure that an untrained person is going to have some trouble using it without taking the opportunity to understand the basics of a plant. Nothing is free. With only a little effort this book will be very useful. And please be aware that the author essentially described the demographics of where this book would be most helpful: 85% in Montana (where he lives) and 5% in Florida (where I guess that he never dwelt ).
Update 11/5/2012: Just found a beautiful weed from the backyard. Used this book to determine it had been from the Solanum family. Unfortunately it is a genus which wasn't covered in the book. . Botany in a Day is very useful even when the genus is not within the book!

I've learned many new things already (3/4 of how through book 1); however I think that it is worth saying a couple of potential problems that haven't been elucidated by additional reviews. Finally I am happy that I downloaded the books but I would not recommend them to others without reservation.
To begin with, I do not believe these books are suitable for someone who does not yet have background in the material. They move very fast and don't spend enough time on any one topic to properly ingrain it in the mind. If you are attempting to educate yourself from scratch, then I would recommend a conventional textbook over these assignments. Should you decide to go with them, you will also need to download a nutritional supplement such as"Exercises for the Feynman Lectures on Physics" since the publication doesn't have some problem sets.
Secondly, the books are showing their age. There were several points in which for example a 3d graph would have made things much clearer, but due to the constraints of this time it was not possible to provide such a guess. There was an whole chapter on numerical calculation that's interesting purely at a historic fashion now, as it teaches you the way calculation was done before the availability of pocket calculators. There were several points where Feynman stated that something was not figured out in the time, and that I was left wondering when we'd improved our understanding of it in the 50 years since. The fundamental material has not changed at all because Feynman gave the lectures, but there are still many little ways in which the era of the books are a detriment.
Finally, I concur with all the other comments about hard to read glossy paper, small print, and poor utilization of space.
